Little League Announces New Rules and Regulations for Pitchers for 2008
Rules Further Refined to Protect
Young Arms From Overuse
Last season, Little League International enacted a new
mandatory pitch count for pitchers ages 7 and above in order to help protect
young developing arms from overuse. Dover coaches have
always been mindful of the health of our young ballplayers so
we became a willing member of the Pitch Count Pilot Program in 2005-2006.
That Pilot Program was used to create these rules.
Little League International has qualified the program as a complete success, and
has fine-tuned the rules for the 2008 season. Such provisions for
reduced pitch counts at the
7-8 (farm) league and rules preventing pitchers
from later switching to the catcher position have been added, as well as
other adjustments which Little League hopes will keep young pitchers healthy.
The rules will also be beneficial because it will allow
for the development of new pitchers and catchers, which will give boys
and girls who might not have had the opportunity to pitch and catch in the past
a greater chance to play the positions.
As many baseball fans know, even professional pitchers are placed on a 'pitch
count'; most pro managers and coaches will not let their pitchers go much beyond
100 pitches these days. That's not just done to protect a team's financial
investment, but to ensure that a quality arm will stay that way. Little
League, in responding to the changing climate surrounding the frailty of
developing young arms (and with the help of noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews),
has put these rules in place so that our youngsters can continue to play the
game of baseball pain- and injury-free.

Board of Directors Adds New Members for 2008
Though some long-time members said goodbye at
the Dover Little League Board of Directors elections on September 27th, an equal
amount said hello. The remainder just changed positions.
The Board welcomes new members Jes and Jeff Haegler, Dave Anttila, Tim Doolittle and Lynn
Barillari. Tim has taken on the role of League Vice President and
part-time Equipment Manager; Dave will be the league's Safety Officer; Jes will
fill the vacant role of Player Agent; Lynn will be the league's new Registrar;
and Jeff will serve as a trustee.
Jay Murphy will serve as the League's new President. Former president Scott Daversa will remain on the board as assistant Treasurer and trustee (with Steve Kosar remaining Treasurer), while Kristine Daversa will also serve as a trustee and help transition the role of registrar to Lynn.
For 2008, Chris Haley will continue her role as the League's secretary. Frank Harrington, Rick Barto and Chuck Barillari will remain on as trustees.
The Board would like to thank Scott and Kristine for their
exemplary and self-less service to the league under the auspices of the new
Board. A better President and First Lady we could not have asked for over
the past three years. We would also like to whole-heartedly thank Jane Janecek for her many, many years of devoted
service on the board and Dan Hamilton for the tremendous effort and support he
provided
in three years as Vice President.
Without the assistance of volunteers, past and present, the League would not be
as strong as it is heading into 2008.
